The Lowy Institute’s Sam Roggeveen says “it is fitting that we should have the closest possible relationship with Indonesia”. Indonesia's President Joko Widodo delivered a historic address to parliament as he and Prime Minister Scott Morrison officially ratified a free trade agreement between the two nations.
He said “there is enormous potential for Australia” in terms of the value of the nation’s relationship with Indonesia, however there was also a “risk” involved.
“We cannot be in a situation where” Indonesia becomes a “great power on our doorstep” and “we don’t have a really solid, friendly relationship” with them.
“We need to prepare for that future now.”
