New Zealand Prime Minister and Fijian Minister for Trade visit RISE informal settlement

New Zealand Prime Minister and Fijian Minister for Trade visit RISE informal settlement We have to build resilient communities, says New Zealand Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Jacinda Ardern.

Prime Minister Ardern highlighted this as she officiated at the ground breaking ceremony for the RISE (Rising Informal Settlements and the Environments) Project at Tamavua-i-wai in Suva this afternoon.

“As we face the consequences of climate change, Fiji knows well the consequences of flooding.”

“The voice of the Pacific is so important on the world stage right now, to remind other world leaders of the real impacts of the environment that you are facing daily. You are already a voice on the world stage.”

While thanking the New Zealand Government for the assistance, the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Hon. Premila Kumar said that through this continued support, Fiji will be able to forge ahead with much needed infrastructural work with the installation and improvement of utilities, including roads, water and electricity in the communities.

“These projects perfectly complement our ongoing housing programmes because it also addresses the very critical issue of climate resilience in the most vulnerable areas in our communities,” Minister Kumar said.

The RISE project will use innovative, community driven nature based methods to address health, environment, water and sanitation issues faced by people in informal settlements.
