From Middle French grommeler 'mutter between the teeth' or directly from Middle Dutch grommelen 'murmur, mutter, grunt', from grommen 'to rumble, growl'. Imitative, or perhaps akin to grim (adj.). With unetymological -b- as in mumble. Cognate with German grummeln ('to grumble').
