Twelve more people have tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to 35.
Chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty said three of the new patients were close contacts of a known case, transmitted in the UK – believed to be a Surrey resident.
Another, who is from Essex, had not travelled out of the country. Investigations are ongoing as to whether they contracted it from a person who had recently returned from abroad.
Six of the newly-diagnosed patients had recently travelled back to the UK from Italy - the worst-hit European country. Two had returned from Iran, the country in the Middle East with the highest number of confirmed cases.
