The Belize Defense Force has come under fire for the manner in which it handled the notification of the families of the deceased airmen. As with Jean Baizar, who lost a son in the fatal helicopter crash, Jasmin Choco also found out about the accident that claimed her husband’s life on social media. That was after twenty-four hours of desperately trying to make contact with him by phone. According to the grieving wife, no one reached out to her from the B.D.F. to inform her of Corporal Reynaldo Choco’s demise. She says that it was her persistence in trying to reach her husband that resulted in her finding out about the tragic incident on Facebook. The military, she maintains, has failed all four families. She recounts a conversation with a fellow B.D.F. colleague who answered her husband’s phone sometime around eleven p.m. on the night of February twenty-seventh.
