Hong Kong shoppers cleared shelves of some daily essentials starting in early February 2020, when panic buying began amid fears of shortages caused by the coronavirus outbreak.But the Hong Kong government says it has a rice reserve of 12,100 tonnes, which combined with an estimated 14,000 tonnes stocked up by some 230 local importers, should be enough to cover one month of consumption by the city.“Don’t panic,” was the simple message from Anthony Lam Sai-ho, a rice importer and a member of the non-statutory body Customer Liaison Group for Rice of the Trade and Industry Department.(Photo: Nora Tam)
